Doyen Sports regrets the KNVB's decision to relegate Eredivisie club FC Twente to the Jupiler League. The club made significant financial efforts in the past, and had requested Doyen Sports' input. When we were approached by the club, no other entity or investor was willing to provide the required funding.
FC Twente were not relegated for having made use of Third-party Investment (TPI), as the club entered into this agreement at a time when it was fully authorised by FIFA rules. Indeed, FIFA's decision to ban the use of TPI, taken against the opinion of the majority of the stakeholders it consulted on the matter, only came into effect in May 2015.
The fate of FC Twente is a reflection of an increasingly polarised European football panorama, where major clubs from the bigger leagues regularly dominate domestic and European competitions. Thanks to their huge revenues, the richest clubs often stifle the possibilities of clubs like FC Twente and others from the Eredivisie of competing for some of the most prestigious trophies in world football.
Clubs from leagues like the Eredivisie that generate less revenues may be condemned to being feeder clubs, regularly seeing their best players leave at a young age to clubs in competitions like the Premier League.
